RETURN VISIT TO STOTFOLD BEDFORDSHIRE 2001
The riverside playing fields as they are today, some things never change! It is still a popular bathing place in the hot weather. Many families come to picnic, relax and just enjoy the pleasant surroundings, it was called the Fore-bridge in my school days, (This dates back to before the bridge, when people had to cross the river via a ford) I believe today its called the Beach.
I took the opportunity to fly a few kites during my visit.
As you can see from these photographs the weather was fine.
I am sorry that the kites are not very clear but as most of my friends know I do like to fly quite high, although personally I blame the photographer, my old school chum Robin Mulliss who kindly took these photographs for me.(no offense mate)
It was very pleasant to re-visit the place where, as a child I spent many a happy day.
Although it was a lot different during my childhood days, as I remember there was just a large meadow, full of tall grass and a couple of large dew ponds. In the spring we would go and retrieve frog spawn to hatch out at home. I seem to remember several clouts from my parents for going home soaked after falling in ( or was it being pushed in ) I must admit to being guilty of the latter several times myself.
During the school holidays we would go fishing, I often used to take home Pike, which my mum would cook for the family pets as none of us liked the taste of it much.
Today there is a car park, as show above, swings, slides, roundabouts, skateboard ramps and climbing frames. The grass is mostly cut short and there are picnic tables dotted around the whole area.
