KITES & KITE FLYING PART 18

KITE SAFETY

AS WITH ANY SPORT, THE POTENTIAL HAZARDS OF KITE FLYING SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN LIGHTLY. ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT IRRESPONSIBLE FLYING MAY CAUSE INJURY, OR EVEN DEATH, AND THAT THE KITE FLYER IS TOTALLY ACCOUNTABLE FOR FLYING SAFELY.

IN VIEW OF THE AFOREMENTIONED, HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT GUIDELINES

AVOID FLYING IN WET OR STORMY CONDITIONS, AS USING WET FLYING LINE CAN BE HAZARDOUS

DON'T FLY NEAR POWER LINES, PYLONS OR AERIALS. IF YOU DO GET CAUGHT UP, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES TRY AND RETRIEVE THE KITE YOURSELF. CONTACT THE APPROPRIATE AUTHORITY OR LEAVE THE KITE, IT CAN BE REPLACED, IF YOU ARE ELECTROCUTED YOU CAN'T

Avoid fields with livestock, it usually indicates private property, and kites can frighten animals. Try and avoid areas strewn with debris or rabbit warrens, when looking up at your kite it is easy to trip over and injure yourself. Keep well clear of areas that have a large number of kite eating trees, and avoid walking backwards without looking to see what is behind you!

Never fly close to Public Highways, or railways or areas which are congested with people

If you want to fly a stunt kite, fly well away from other people, they can cause serious injuries, especially if you are just starting out. Power kites are NOT toys, always seek advice before trying to fly one, and start off small and then progress to a larger kite once you have gained some experience. THEY CAN KILL!

Any large kite can be potentially dangerous, always make proper preparations before attempting to fly , I e :- Have secure anchorage points, and mark them clearly, so that people don't trip over them, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE if your equipment injures someone. It is also wise to wear some stout gloves to protect your hands, kite lines can cut and burn you severely, no matter what size, so be careful

Protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays, with sunglasses, a wide brimmed hat is also useful, and a suitable rated sun screen is advisable as overexposure may cause skin cancer

AVOID AIRFIELDS, AIRPORTS & HELIPORTS OR ANY AREA YOU KNOW IS DIRECTLY ON A MAIN FLIGHT PATH

Have fun out there I hope you will find some of the above helpful

common sense makes sense be safety conscious!

The reason Mike Howard is not in the picture is he'd either fallen over, (too much work) or he's behind the camera!
