KITES & KITE FLYING PART 13

SOME FRIENDS KITES

The three kites you see here are all constructed in the traditional Japanese style. They were all designed and hand painted by Mikio Toki
from Tokyo, Japan.

As stated in previous pages I had the privilege of having Mikio, pictured below, stay with me for a week whilst visiting this country for various kite Festivals.

During his stay he showed me many of the techniques he employs in making his wonderful creations. All of which are assisted by Saki, traditional Japanese drink.

( takes your head off! think it was some of his paint thinners really! )

Opposite Mikio Toki presents one of his kites to Ray Oakhill, on behalf of The Brighton Kite Flyers as a big thank you, for all his hard work over the years as the kite club Chairperson/Coordinator, I had the privilege of taking over the position on his retirement, unfortunately I now have had to retire from the position on health grounds, and have handed over to Simon Hennessey.

These hand crafted kites are constructed using rice paper, or silk and bamboo, and then beautifully painted.

I have often seen these flying in this country, but it seems a shame to fly such delicate pieces of art, which are not designed to take the stronger winds of Britain than those of the Asian countries where they originate.

KITES & KITE FLYING PART 12

KITES BY PETER LYNN OF NEW ZEALAND

Although part 11 & 12 show pictures of inflatable kites, Peter Lynn has also designed many other types of kite.

His collection also includes Traction and Lifting kites and more recently, kites specifically designed for Kite Surfing, along with boards, buggies and all the associated bits and pieces.

How Peter finds time to create all his kites I really don't know?
He spends a lot of time traveling to kite Festivals around the world displaying his kites.

If you are fortunate enough to meet up with him, I'm sure he will find ti me to have a chat with you, I've met him on several occasions and he is a really nice guy.

So don't be shy, introduce yourself, a nice cool beer should do the job, so go prepared.

Oh and by the way he sell's some great hats for kiting, nice wide brim keeps the sun out your eyes and the wind out your hair!

If you find time to visit my site and are reading this Peter, I think it's time I got a new Hat.
